Food Safety Legal Obligations

As a Restaurants and Cafes owner or member of staff handling food, you have a legal obligation to comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) 852/2004 of the European Parliament on the Safety of Foodstuffs, the Food Safety Act 1990 & Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2005.

The Legal Requirements

In simple terms the legal requirements are as follows:-

  • Food handlers must be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food Safety matters relevant to their work.
  • The person responsible for developing and maintaining food Safety procedures must be trained in the application of HACCP principles.

How Often Do You Need To Take The Course

Generally accepted good practice within the is that training should be renewed every three years although some employers, including the NHS, require certificates to be renewed every year.
